More than one in four people in the province is food insecure. This was one of the harrowing figures released recently by the province’s MEC for social development, Bukiwe Fanta, in the Eastern Cape legislature.
While millions of rand allocated for food aid have been returned unspent to the National Treasury in the past three years, the Eastern Cape social development department has admitted that many people remain trapped in the cycle of poverty as government efforts fail to yield the desired results.
The children’s bodies were found on Monday morning. On Tuesday, a search and rescue team recovered Ntombizanele’s body where it lay in thick bush. It is understood she also poisoned herself.
