あしかけ17年、北は北海道から西は九州まで。忠敬率いる測量隊が列島を股に掛けて踏査した測量作業は10次に及ぶ。その行程は4万キロを軽く超え、忠敬自身が歩いた距離は3万5千キロにもなった。
50歳過ぎて測量
測量事業は第5次から幕府の直轄となったが、それまでは忠敬の手弁当だったという。彼が全国測量に取り組み始めたのは50歳を過ぎてから。決して若くはない忠敬を駆り立てたのはなんだったのだろう。
