Green light for new northern train line

UPDATED: A majority in Parliament has overruled the Norwegian government and voted Tuesday to start working on an extension of the
Nordlandsbanen train line to Tromsø. Transport Minister Knut Arild Hareide called the vote “irresponsible” because of the huge costs involved.
The new line would finally extend train service in Norway north to Tromsø, through some spectacular scenery but also areas of rough weather and terrain. Plans have also included spurs over to the airport at Evenes and as far west as Harstad. MAP: Jernbanedirektoratet
Plans now call, however, for a new train line to run from Fauske (just east of Bodø) north to Narvik, Bardufoss and Tromsø. The new
World s first full-scale ship tunnel gets go ahead to be built in Norway
The 1.7-kilometre Stad Ship Tunnel, which will have a pair of stone entrances designed by Snøhetta, has been given the green light and construction is now set to begin in 2022.
Designed to make shipping safer along the west coast of Norway, the Stad Ship Tunnel will connect the Kjødepollen bay and Vanylvsfjorden so that cargo and passenger ships of up to 16,000 tonnes can avoid dangerous shipping routes around the Stad peninsula.
It is believed to be the first tunnel for large ships built anywhere in the world.
Norway to strengthen green cooperation with EU

Norway has technology and expertise that is vital for Europe’s green transition. In a meeting between Norwegian ministers and EU commissioners today, Norway and the EU agreed to strengthen cooperation on how to promote the transition to a modern and competitive low-carbon economy.
The
European Green Deal was launched by the European Commission in 2019. This is both a growth strategy and a cross-sectoral plan to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent in the world by 2050.
During today s meeting, members of the European Commission and Norwegian government ministers discussed how to translate ambitious climate targets into concrete action. Meeting the goals set out in the Paris Agreement will require a transformation process that extends across all areas of society and stakeholders.
