Driving Commerce: Automakers rely on S C Ports

Share Byron Miller remembers when BMW first announced plans to export vehicles from the Port of Charleston in the early 1990s. He served as an intern then for the S.C. Ports Authority, but over the years his roles have changed, earning him a front-row-seat to the port’s growing relationship with the car manufacturer as director of sales. Throughout the last three decades, automotive has become one of the largest commodity groups for the SCPA, especially as two-way volume is concerned, based on the scale, the number of employees and investments.  Today, the SCPA contracts with three original equipment manufacturers: BMW, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Vans, who all call on the Columbus Street Terminal. BMW, however, is at the core of the state’s automotive sector and recently exported its 3 millionth car from the terminal.

Print Robert Engelhorn, who currently heads BMW s plant in Munich, will take over the management of the automaker s U.S. factory. BMW Group announced personnel changes in the company’s global production network, with its plants in Munich, Germany, Oxford, England, and the United States, getting new directors starting Sept. 1. Robert Engelhorn, 51, who currently heads the Munich plant, will take over management of the automaker s largest production location, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The company s only U.S. factory produces the vast majority of BMW X vehicles. Engelhorn replaces 61-year-old Knudt Flor, who is retiring. Flor served as boss of the Spartanburg plant since December 2016, while Engelhorn has been in charge of the Munich factory since August 2018.
