The University of Oregon Receives Second Donation of $500 Million for New Campus

The gift matches an earlier $500 million donation by the Knights in 2016, which founded the University’s new Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact. Robert E. Guldberg, UO’s vice-president and leader of the new campus, expressed his hopes for the program going forward. “The gift gives us life to a fuller vision,” Guldberg said, “enabling us to dream and reach for the future on a very compressed timeline, building what normally would take decades in just a number of years. We are empowered and energized by this opportunity to do what we love; training the next generation of diverse leaders in science and engineering, and translating scientific knowledge and discoveries into new industries and societal impact.”

University of Oregon Campus Could Be Cornerstone of New Biotech Hotspot

Published: Feb 15, 2021 By Alex Keown Drew Angerer/Getty Images A new biotech hotspot could be on the horizon in Oregon thanks to a $500 million gift to the University of Oregon from Nike co-founder Phil Knight, an alumnus of the university. The financial gift led to the creation of the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact. Officially Knight Campus will support researchers as they advance the initiative’s mission to shorten the timeline between discovery, development and deployment of innovative treatments. The facility was established in hopes of accelerating scientific discovery and development through training programs and entrepreneurship in what is being billed as a collaborative cross-discipline environment. With this focus on innovative partnerships, the new campus could serve as a cornerstone of a new biotech hotspot in the Pacific Northwest.
