her, but it did change my perspective. and when you think about, i think people are always surprised to realize that condoleezza rice was there in birmingham, thinking, how could she make those choices? but i think it also speaks to what the breadth of the african-american community was like during that time period, and whites just believe, if we just bomb enough, if we just beat you up enough, if we just shoot at you enough, you will quit wanting to be equal. and that s not the case. and the other thing people do forget, the roots of that notion of an individual right to bear arms are in the black and not the kmit community. it was armed groups of african-americans, i heard this story in sanford and in the 30s, they had to form these armed militiases to protect themselves. the dynamite stick was the weapon of choice. not the gun, as well as, obviously, lynching the weapon of mass destruction. that was the weapon of mass destruction. and so a lot of african-americans were arm
dan. reporter: it really will be wolf. it is a difficult time for those in the boston area dealing with the aftermath of the bombings. the vice president taking part in the memorial service. the vice president will be delivering remarks during the noon service that will be praying tribute to someone who did what he could to help other people. there was a private funeral for officer collier yesterday, but this is again a more public affair. 10,000 people not only those in the m.i.t. community, but law enforcement officials from all other the country. he was involved in much more than law enforcement. he was involved with the ambulance service on campus. he helped out organizations that were fighting cancer. someone who everyone has something good to say about
prosecutors are expected to file charges this week against dzhokhar tsarnaev for the murder of 26-year-old m.i.t. police officer shawn collier. shawn collier s funeral was held today at st. patrick s church in stoneham, massachusetts. tomorrow m.i.t. will have a memorial service for officer collier. it will be open to the m.i.t. community but closed to the public. vice president joe biden is expected to attend. no family suffered more in the boston bombing than the richard family of dorchester. 7-year-old jane richard lost a leg. her mother denise suffered a head injury, and her eight-year-old brother, martin, was the youngest person to die in the bombing. the richard family released this statement. the outpouring of love and support over the last week has been tremendous.
reporter: sean s brother said he was born to be a police officer. the campus was hit hard. a lot of students shocked, others didn t want to talk to us, more than a week later. he was beloved. he wasn t just a security officer he was almost one of them. he went hiking and with the students and went to dances. he was going to join the somerville police department and, by the way, there is a medal now being honored by m.i.t. called the collier medal. here s a student who reflected on what happened. i really value and revere the sacrifice that he made for this community. it really brings to mind how wonderful it is there are people who do value the m.i.t. community and the boston community to such an extent that they can put their lives on the line for it.
