Kareyn Hellmann has joined The Paris News as a full-time summer intern until Aug.13.
Hellmann has previously partnered with The Paris News as a freelance journalist, writing numerous types of news and human interest stories. For The Paris News, she will cover the cities of Deport and Reno as well as various community events and happenings.
A student at Texas Christian University, Hellmann is double majoring in strategic communications and chemistry with a minor in creative writing and honors. She will graduate in 2024. She also graduated with her associate degree in journalism from Paris Junior College in 2020. She plans to pursue a career as a public relations practitioner working on behalf of a STEM or pharmaceutical company.
The Paris News was again named among the top three best daily newspapers in Northeast Texas on Friday by the North & East Texas Press Association, earning 10 awards in the associationâs Better Newspaper Contest.
âOur local journalists have worked hard to provide the community a quality newspaper, and we are grateful our colleagues have recognized that work with these awards,â managing editor Klark Byrd said. âThis year was tough because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but we stayed true to the newspaperâs mission and that effort paid off for the staff and for readers.â
The Paris News earned three first place awards, for Column Writing, Editorials and Feature Story, four second place awards and three third place awards for work done in 2020.

Almost exactly a year after I moved here, Iâve decided to take a job opportunity back home in Washington state, so this will be my last column in The Paris News. To say Iâll be sad to leave is an understatement.
Moving to Northeast Texas from Seattle was a culture shock for me. Iâd never lived in a place where people youâve never met before would wave and smile at you on the street. Iâd never had someone hold the door open for me just as a courtesy. Iâd also never lived somewhere this hot â and Iâve been told that last summer was âmild.â And Iâd never learned so much in just one year.
