Black-led protests, Black writers editorials, Black friends Facebook postings show me not only the constant fear that affects every Black person s interaction with white authority and white strangers, but also the daily emotional toll of uncounted microaggressions, all the tiny pinpricks of racism (often unconscious) that give Black and other people of color the message that they re considered suspicious, abnormal or subnormal, not “really” American, because of their race. Being considered “exotic” can t feel much better. Even compliments often carry a sting. Praising a Black person for being articulate or a good parent, for example, implies that the opposite is more typical of their race.

Library did so much during a difficult year Patty Grenquist, Bremerton This week my grandson and I went to the Kitsap Regional Library on Sylvan Way in Bremerton. It was a glorious experience to be inside a library perusing the shelves after more than a year s absence. But, it got me thinking how grateful I am for the library; never more so than during a pandemic where reading was one pleasure allowed. KRL had to pivot to a new way of doing business during the pandemic and pivot they did. Setting up a system to allow people access to books with strict Covid procedures wasn t easy but they did it. In all kinds of weather, day after day, month after month we drove up to the library, at our pre-arranged appointment time, and received our new books. The librarians were invariably courteous and quick to hand over all our pre-ordered books. What a great job they did.
