ILWomen DIII Roundup: St John Fisher, Denison, Salisbury and Tufts Advance to Semis

Tuesday May 18th, 2021 8:00am (Photo Courtesy: Mike Tripp)  After this past weekend of the 2021 NCAA Division III women’s lacrosse tournament, only four teams remain. St. John Fisher, Denison and Tufts will each have an opportunity to bring home its program’s first national title, while Salisbury is looking for its fourth overall and first since 2014.  In the round of 16, a last-minute goal by Sydney DeGirolamo lifted ninth-ranked St. John Fisher past No. 16 William Smith 10-9 on Saturday. The Cardinals go out to a quick start, holding a 5-2 lead heading into halftime. The Herons battled back to make it 9-9, but St. John Fisher goalie Claudia Mocciaro made two big stops in the final two minutes, before DeGirolamo found nylon with just 33 seconds remaining to secure the victory. St. John Fisher carried that momentum into its quarterfinal game against No. 10 Messiah, triumphing 9-5 to advance to the semifinals for the first time in program history.
