02/18/21 Cedar Rapids firefighters say two occupants of an apartment were displaced after a fire in their living room overnight Personnel were deployed to a multi-family structure on the 200 block of Kirkwood Court Southwest at 2:50am. When firefighters arrived, they found thick black smoke in a second story apartment. The two female occupants met crews outside and advised that no one else was inside. The entire building was evacuated as firefighters found a small fire in the living room and quickly extinguished it. The apartment suffered moderate smoke and fire damage; no injuries were reported. Battalion Chief Brian Gibson said the smoke detectors had been removed from the apartment, and the two women were lucky one of them woke up and got both of them out safely. The incident is still under investigation.
