The story of the Honours of Scotland - our Crown Jewels

WHAT’S THE STORY? THE Honours of Scotland, also known as the Scottish Crown Jewels, are back on public display again as Edinburgh Castle has opened its doors to visitors after the latest easing of lockdown restrictions. It has been a low-key return for the Castle, and visitors still have to pre-book to get in, but once there the Castle has much to offer, not least of which are the Stone of Destiny – until it is moved to its new home in Perth – and the Honours of Scotland. I suspect many Scots will be only vaguely aware that we have our own set of Crown Jewels which are considerably different from the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London because they are much older and, in my far from humble opinion, much more beautiful than those in London.

An experienced worker can expect to earn between £200 to £300 per day picking daffodils, and at the height of the season – which lasts February through to May – vast swathes of the countryside turns yellow with the growing effort.

For more than a millennium, Dunnottar Castle has seen countless attempts to storm its ancient walls and break down the doors of this glorious, ancient stronghold. The latest attempt – a tawdry bid to break through a door and lock at the front of the imposing edifice last week – is not even a footnote in a history which has seen the castle attacked by Vikings, stormed by William Wallace and bombarded by Oliver Cromwell’s cannons as he tried to seize the Honours of Scotland, the nation’s crown jewels.
