we have in many instances failed to live up to them. but i think we have an interesting moment here, a moment that is combined with the demographic shifts, a moment that s combined with the fact that many of our young people are growing up in a much more diverse world even though we re as segregated as we probably have ever been, but they re growing up with diverse images and the like. since this is dr. king s holiday, he wrote where do we go from here, chaos in our community in 1967, he said that for too long white americans believed that racial equality is just a loose expression for improvement, a loose expression for improvement. that racial equality is in some ways viewed as a charitable enterprise, something that white people give to others. we have an opportunity to begin to think about america as a much more just place, racial inequality in a much more robust sense. we re changing.
how you create change, and that is what dr. king and my father and dr. lowrie and others did during the civil rights movement when they were fighting bigotry. and unfortunately, that is what the president obama is going to to have to learn to do with the go gop. what are your thoughts as we get ready to see president obama sworn in for a second time tomorrow? i think that it s shows great respect that he chose to do it on the dr. king holiday. i think that it is vy important that we across the country continue to remember the great impact that dr. king had on our country. i think that it s a huge tribute that president obama chose to pick dr. king s holiday for his swearing in. your father, of course, marched with dr. king in selma in 1965, and he was one of the close advisers. what remains to be accomplished
king s holiday and in south carolina, clearly dr. king was not just for blacks, but he clearly was for issues of inequality across the board. wouldn t you think it would be inappropriate in this time, particularly on king s birthday, a holiday, a federal holiday, if they were not questioned and not at least among the other issues they deal with talk about economic inequality, what they would do about it, gauk the continued institutional racism, what they would do about it, talk about the flag and talk about the issues that we face today that king even had dealt with over four decades ago. i ll make this quick. look. south carolina left this union over states rights. dr. king was in favor of federal funding for public education. these candidates are opposed to it. dr. king was in favor of medicaid and medicare. these candidates to the ryan
