The Kings County Board of Supervisors this week upheld a local emergency in the form of a third order, as the county continues to experience flooding impacts from recent storms.
CORCORAN, Calif. Sixth Avenue used to cut through miles of farmland. Now, the road has disappeared under muddy water, its path marked by sodden telephone poles that protrude from the swelling lake. Water laps just below the windows of a lone farmhouse that sits alongside the submerged route.
Tulare Lake, which used to have ferries going across it and was reportedly four times the size of Lake Tahoe, reemerged this winter in Tulare and Kings Counties, swamping farmland that has been in use for decades.
While DWR Director Karla Nemeth and her team are hearing from counties about needed resources, they are also assessing the state’s authority to intervene, if needed.
