Groups in Reading have expressed “huge disappointment” after a mural by street artist Banksy on the side of a former prison was defaced with red paint.
The artwork, entitled Create Escape, appeared on the red brick wall of Reading Prison on March 1 and showed an inmate escaping lockdown using a knotted spool of paper from a typewriter.
On Tuesday, pictures emerged showing that the piece had been defaced with red paint covering the typewriter, with the phrase “Team Robbo” below.
This appears to be a reference to graffiti artist King Robbo, who was in a long-running feud with Banksy before his death in 2014.
The feud between King Robbo and Banksy reportedly dates back to 1990s.
King Robbo claims to have met Banksy in a pub in Old Street, London.
The artists says he slapped Banksy after Banksy claimed to have never heard of him.
In 2009, a piece of graffiti art painted by a 15-year-old King Robbo in 1985 was destroyed by Banksy who replaced it with a stencil of a workman pasting wallpaper.
The graffiti was under the British Transport Police HQ in London and was considered one of the oldest in the country.
Later that year, Robbo then reclaimed his piece from Banksy s defacing by covering the work so the workman appeared to be painting KING ROBBO in silver letters.
