The Civil War was the deadliest war in American history with 720,000 soldiers and civilians killed.  It began in 1861 when eleven southern states who supported slavery seceded from the United States of America and formed the Confederate States of America.  Essentially, the Confederacy (South) fought the Union (U.S. federal government, or North).

A prisoner of war's journey - The County

National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day was April 9.  It is hard to fathom that in our small rural area we have had more than one POW, but unfortunately it is true.  One such man was Norman Hanson.   Norman was born on July 23, 1924, in Mars Hill, the son of Fred Chester Hanson and Pansy D. Shaw.

How Presque Isle's hospital came to be - The County

Presque Isle has always had, since its early inception, some form of medical care. whether it be through visiting doctors or in private homes.  By the late 1800s, Presque Isle had two private hospitals.

Here's how ice was harvested - The County

Ice harvesting on the stream, brooks, lakes, ponds and rivers of Maine in the days before modern day refrigeration techniques was the norm.  People used the large blocks of ice to keep food cold.  In addition, before the invention of refrigerated trailers and cargo containers, ice was also used to transport frozen food.
