After years of explaining cultural appropriation in food in articles, interviews and podcasts, I had almost given up hope that anyone would get why it matters.
For a time, it seemed like I was the de facto cultural appropriation wonk for media outlets, and I repeatedly entertained questions about who was being hurt when, say, white people made curry at home. I strove to get past knee-jerk reactions that miscast what I was trying to say because the alternative taking me seriously seemed doubtful.
