SOUTH BEND â A former employee at the St. Joseph County board of voter registration has filed suit against the county board of commissioners and voter registration board member Muhammad Shabazz, alleging Shabazz sexually harassed her during her time working in the office.
According to a complaint filed last week in federal court, Trisha Carrico served on the voter registration board as a Republican deputy clerk from 2018 until she resigned in November of this year because of Shabazzâs unwanted sexual advances. Shabazz is a Democratic member on the board.
The voter registration office is in charge of maintaining voter registration rolls, securing polling places and providing reports and voter lists for candidates, according to the officeâs website. The voter registration office is composed of two board members and six deputies, all of whom are appointed by the chairperson of countyâs Republican and Democratic parties.
