Man didn t follow basic firearm safety rules ahead of teen s deadly shooting

A warrant released this week revealed more details about an apparent accident shooting that left a teen dead late Monday afternoon in North Lubbock.
Investigators believe 16-year-old Elijah Morin was fatally wounded after he was struck by a bullet that went through a wall as 64-year-old Kimberly Hozempa was cleaning a gun in an adjacent room about 4:25 p.m. in the 500 block of North Flint Avenue.
According to the warrant, police received a 911 call in reference to a shooting in the 500 block of North Flint Avenue.

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - A 64-year-old man remains in police custody after the gun he was cleaning discharged and killed a teenager in another room.
Police have charged Kimberly Hozempa with criminal negligent homicide in the shooting death of a 16-year-old.
The Lubbock Police Department was called to a shooting just before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of North Flint Avenue.
Police say, Hozempa told the officer he had the gun and was going to clean it. He removed the magazine, checked the gun and pointed it away from him when it accidentally went off, according to an arrest warrant issued for Hozempa.
Lubbock Police on Tuesday afternoon made an arrest after being called out to the scene of a shooting in north Lubbock.
When officers arrived at a residence in the 500 block of North Flint Avenue, they found a 16 year old who had been shot. The teen was later pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.
Sixty-four-year-old Kimberly Hozempa (pictured above) was attempting to clean a firearm when it discharged. According to LPD, the bullet from the gun traveled through a wall and struck the 16 year old in another room.
Hozempa was arrested and immediately charged with Negligent Homicide. He s been booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center.
