knowledge to go and help them. reporter: oren lieberman, cnn at the pentagon. joining me now is kimberly dozer, a cnn global affairs analyst. thank you for joining us, good morning. my first question to you is are we seeing a new phase in this war where the world is coming to the realization that we re in for a long, drawn-out battle? there s no credible diplomatic track that exists right now, right? and if anything, the war could widen on several fronts. absolutely. it seems like ever since secretary of defense austin and secretary of state blinken convened that meeting of 40 nations in ramstein air base that everyone has realized this is going to be something that lasts at least through this year and maybe many more years
a simply stunning moment on russian television. an employee of a major russian network crashed the set of a live newscast to protest the invasion of ukraine. her sign reads, stop the war. do not believe propaganda. they tell you lies here. she also recorded this video message. joining me cnn chief media correspondent and host of reliable sources brian stelter and bianna golodryga and kimberly dozer. brian, remarkable and courageous act of defiance. we have not heard anything verifiable about the woman sense.
foreigners. i m having people who i worked with back in the fall in kabul in 2001 reaching out to me saying is there any way you can get me, my family out to any country that s safe? they re going to come after me and kill me. real quickly, colonel, was this the right decision to make? it s really tough, christi. yes, in many ways it was the right decision to pull out. at some point you have to leave. i think the lack of planning for the next phase is what we re seeing here. that s going to be a real problem. i don t think it will be pretty and easy. kimberly and colonel leighton, we appreciate both of you. thank you. you bet, christi. ahead of cnn s star studded cnn special, billy ray cyrus sits down to discuss his performance. stay tuned for that. .from a lot of that.
have boots on the ground. we won t have ears and eyes that are right in the country and that is going to be one of the biggest issues. we can do many things remotely, we can do things via satellite, via drone, but it s not as good as being in country and getting a feel for the people. afghanistan is a tribal culture. 14 different ethnicities, 8 different languages spoken and there are so many different aspects to this that require a real subtle understanding of the country and the culture and that was, i think, one of the biggest mistakes that we ve made is not recognizing those nuances. so, kimberly, when just a couple of weeks ago when you mentioned the taliban, lloyd austin told the senate appropriations committee al qaeda could pose a threat to the u.s. in as little as two years.
thank you so much. we really appreciate the information. let s go to cnn global affairs analyst kimberly dozer and cedric leighton. i appreciate you being with us. kimberly, i want to play for you this from president biden yesterday. i melt with the afghan government here in the white house. i think they have capacity to be able to sustain the government. i know you ve spoken to u.s. officials and foreign diplomats, what are they telling you about the afghan government s readiness and capabilities? do they agree with president biden s assessment? when you talk to the afghan officials, president ghani came and spoke to a group of press last week. he told us they could stay the course, but when you talk to people close to the palace as well as u.s. and foreign officials, they say it s falling apart. people are being very careful what they tell president ghani
