Census finds 4 million new Texans, enough for 2 extra U S House seats, though we expected more

Census finds 4 million new Texans, enough for 2 extra U.S. House seats, though we expected more Todd J. Gillman, The Dallas Morning News Updated at 4:50 p.m. with new information throughout. WASHINGTON Texas gained a modest two congressional seats in the 2020 Census, the Census Bureau announced Monday, making it the big winner nationwide but dashing expectations that torrid growth in the last decade would yield at least three more seats. Texas’ official population now stands at 29,145,505, up 15.9% since the last census. That’s 3,999,944 new Texans more people than call the 23 smallest states home, or who live Dallas, San Antonio and Austin combined.

Citing Lack of Census Participation, Arizona Fails To Gain Seat in U S House

PHOENIX Arizona is not going to get more representation in Washington. And one political demographer said it may be because some Hispanics chose not to respond to the decennial survey. The Census Bureau announced Monday that Arizona had not gained enough population in the past decade, at least not in the official count, to merit another congressional seat. That keeps it at nine members of the U.S. House. This is the first time since the 1960 census that Arizona has not picked up a seat. According to the announced tally, Arizona added 746,223 new residents between April 1, 2010 and the same time a decade later, bringing the tally to nearly 7.16 million. That amounted to an 11.6% growth rate.
