The Ministry of Trade plans to pursue three new export markets for miraa as a diplomatic row delay recovery of the largest market in Somalia.
Trade Principal Secretary (PS) Johnson Weru who met a delegation of traders led by Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi on Friday said the ministry would start engaging potential countries including Djibouti, Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique.
Mr Weru said the ministry would give progress reports on the new markets by the end of March next year.
“We have received the appeal from farmers and we will work with our diplomatic service to open conversations with Djibouti, DR Congo, Mozambique and other countries in Africa. The county government should mobilise farmers to work within the guidelines of countries we trade with,” Mr Weru said.

Miraa farmers will have to wait longer before they regain access to the Sh16 million-a-day Somalia market following the latest move by the Horn of Africa state to severe diplomatic ties with Kenya.
The diplomatic row comes at a time when Kenya, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been engaging with their Somalia counterparts to resolve the stalemate that has seen Kenya lose millions of shillings in foreign earnings after the stimulant was banned from accessing that market.
Somalia yesterday announced that it had cut diplomatic ties with Kenya, just a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta hosted Somaliland leader Muse Bihi, with Mogadishu claiming that the move was an affront to its sovereignty.

For a long time, the Nyambene Miraa Farmers and Traders Association (Nyamita) has been trying to penetrate the Somaliland market to no avail.
According to chairman Kimathi Munjuri, the association whose membership consist of farmers, buyers, transporters and others along the value chain, has struggled to gain a share of the Somaliland market, which has been getting miraa from Ethiopia.
Munjuri said khat from Meru is of great quality and that s why they supplied Somalia quantities worth at least Sh16 million daily before that country adopted unfriendly attitude against the produce.
