well, in north texas recovery efforts continue after a series of killer tornadoes. just take a look. you ve seen this devastation over the past few days. the area rancho brazo, six people died in the storm. there are some wonderful and dramatic stories of survival. our randi kaye caught one unexpected reunion on tape. hey, randi. morning, poppy. all over town here there are signs for people who lost pets in the tornado directing them to animal shelters and even for those who lost their homes, finding their pets is top priority. when the winds picked up,

getting through. how science teachers are turning to popular music. how this class act is helping students finally take interest. we said this earlier in the week, whatever it takes. however you get the message across. however you get the message across, the fact that it gets across is a good thing. but first, leading once again with weather. a monster of a storm is dumping snow in the middle of the country and spawning what may be killer tornadoes. the texas area was hit hard last night. after a powerful storm killed a tornado in her mobile home and the danger is far from over. severe weather warnings up over a big section of the country. our coverage begins with abc s brad wheelis. reporter: across 20 states, old man winter just keeps rolling along. bringing traffic to a slippery, sliding crawl. this was i-435 in kansas. our car is in the ditch. everywhere. people sliding into people. it s a mess out here.
running from these string of killer tornadoes. take a look. we re going to pan across and through the traffic you can see just a touch of what is scattered for miles across this small town, debris that is splintered here. the metal twisted. the shattered glass. the things you typically see when you are dealing with dawn of this magnitude. there are so many people affected here. one shelter already set up by the red cross at this point, another one could be opening by the end of the day here. the governor is expected to be here. she is expected to do an aerial tour of the affected areas within the next hour or two. still a lot going on. as you talked about, thomas, a active search and recovery here. also hope that there will be some rescue here. there are still some people unaccounted for. so they are trying to go through all of the debris here. all of the homes that have been hit and make sure they can account for everyone here. 0 people at least injured here, at least five dead, of th
this. didn t have a whole lot. now i got nothing. reporter: all killer tornadoes. all had tornado warnings. but hundreds of tornado warnings go out and don t end like this, which is why the national weather service is testing a heightened warning system in parts of missouri and kansas which would go beyond the traditional warning. doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado. our hope is with better description will come better action. reporter: and these warnings don t mince words. here s what you might hear. you could be killed if not underground. mass devastation is highly likely. mobile homes will offer no shelter. the words aren t meant to frighten people but to get people to take action. a lesson i ve seen folks learn too late, like in devine, texas.
