KILLEEN, TX â Wednesday was national signing day for high school athletes and given the struggles of the past year, this signing day is that much more special.
It s a day that shows how all the hard work for student-athletes like Haven Habab from Killeen, has paid off.
Haven knew all her hard work paid off when her dreams of going to Kansas State university finally came true with the stroke of a pen.
Haven was a multi-sport athlete at Killeen High and couldnât wait for senior year, then her dreams seemed to dim when her family had to move last summer.
According to 2019 polls, only 29% of youth ages 17 to 24 can qualify for military service. So for those high school seniors brave enough to raise their right hands and join the armed forces, a national nonprofit is standing up to ensure these brave young men and women are recognized and honored for their decision to protect the nation.
The Central Texas chapter of Our Community Salutes is working with high schools from Waco to Lampasas to show those high school seniors willing to serve that the community cares for them and honors their decision, said chapter president Jean Shine.
Due to some pandemic restrictions still in place at different high schools, each school has been holding small ceremonies to offer certificates of thanks, she said. A Facebook live ceremony will be conducted on Saturday at 6 p.m. to honor all in the region who have enlisted, with an appearance by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to offer his personal message of appreciation.
PLACE 6
Newly elected Place 6 board member Cullen Mills, 37, of Killeen, will effectively replace retired longtime board member Minerva Trujillo, after he solidified his win Saturday night. Mills beat opponent Riakos âRockâ Adams by 425 votes.
Mills, a 2002 Harker Heights High School graduate, is the husband of KISD employee, parent educator, Erin Mills, and owner of family business Modern Appliance in Killeen. Mills graduated from University of North Texas with a degree in business administration. Mills will join the other six board members at the upcoming May 11th board meeting.
A total of 2,018 voters cast their ballots in favor of Mills, while 1,593 voted for his opponent Riakos Adams.
