good, bp engineers are pumping cement, this is the latest, into the blownout well, they re pouring cement on top of that thick wall of mud they forced down there earlier this week. it appears the static kill method is successful but the whole thing is far from over. kris gutierrez is in louisiana. where are we now on this effort to plug this well? martha, bp started pumping that cement down into the blownout well at 9:30 this morning. they re using the same choke line or pipes they used to pump the heavy mud in earlier this week. thad allen says it will take 24 hours for the cement to cure, and then he added this. listen: we will create a significant milestone and major step forward probably by tomorrow when the cementing is done. i think we can all breathe a little easier regarding the potential that we ll have oil in the gulf ever again, but we need to ensure that people of the gulf and the people of the united states, that this thing is properly
sea in the gulf of mexico. well, it s a new method, it s called static kill. let me first show you what s going on under the ocean right now. let me show you that camera. as you can see, no oil flowing. this cap that has been on there since july 15th has actually been working quite effectively. but they re getting ready to try something called static kill. a little bit different than the top kill method that didn t work well over a month ago. the difference right now, of course, is when they went in to do top kill, there was still oil flowing. there isn t oil flowing right now, so what they re going to do is put that mud and cement, run it through a bunch of twisted wires, all of these things that are going on right there, they re pumping it through. and basically, when it gets into that well, it s going to solidify, it s going to block that well, and it can go right down into the well itself. now, let me tell you that the ultimate fix for this well is still going to be the relief well
going, this still is a massive disaster that is going to affect people for quite some time. so the update, the good news to tell you about today is that, in fact, the static kill method you have heard so much about, well, it s pretty much wrapped up. they pushed this mud down into that well to fill it up. well then they pushed down some cement, that cement now is hardening. so for all intents and purposes, the static kill step is done. and in effect, this well is dead. however, we still have one more step to go. that is the bottom kill method. that is the method where the relief well, as you have been hearing so much about over the past months are being drilled. they re going to pump this mud into the relief wells to clog the whole well up once and for all with the bottom-kill method. maybe going to happen the next couple weeks. but again, live picture. again, we are happy to see this picture now. nothing coming out. again, still that live picture. nothing coming out of that well. we
