Glanbia Ireland announced its top grain growers for 2020 this week, with Laois farmer John C Fletcher taking the overall award.
John, from Portarlington, took the Supplier of the Year Award and was also the seed barley category champion.
Commenting on his overall win, John, who farms with his father, commented that rotation is key on his farm.
“We’re always trying to build fertility in the soil, as we’re in continuous tillage, he said.
“2020 wasn’t a great year, as drought got us very early on. Yields were poor and were down about 0.5t/ac on 2019 levels.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) today (January 27) called on Minister Eamon Ryan to initiate an urgent review of national energy policy and to guarantee the continued operation of Edenderry Power Station, amid fears that a shortage of peat fuel could jeopardise the plant’s generation capacity and undermine Ireland’s energy security.
Following the recent decision by Bord na Móna to cease all peat harvesting, unions have expressed fears that insufficient stocks of peat could jeopardise the continued running of the Edenderry power plant and precipitate further job losses within Bord na Móna itself.

Bord na Móna has formally ended all peat harvesting on its lands
Bord na Móna has today formally ended all peat harvesting on its lands, as it continues to progress its brown to green strategy.
The company s last full peat harvest took place in 2018, followed by a partial harvest in 2019 and a full suspension of harvesting operations last year.
Bord na Móna said it has decided to make this suspension permanent and will now cease any remaining harvesting preparations, including planning and substitute consent applications.

Surveying works in several areas of Kildare are well underway for the implementation of the national broadband plan (NBP), according to National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the new high-speed fibre broadband network.
NBI said contractors have been on the ground across Ireland for eight months and over 150,000 premises nationwide have been surveyed to date. “This involves physically walking the routes and documenting images, notes and measurements of the poles, cables and underground ducts in each area. This will enable network design solutions for the provision of a fibre network to every premises in the Intervention Area – a map of over 544,000 premises nationwide identified by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communication (DECC) - as not being served with ade
