Crews fully contain 2 Southwest fires June 3rd 10:49 am | Samantha Davenport, Anchorage Daily News     Two fires burning in Southwest Alaska last week have both been fully contained, the Division of Forestry said Saturday. The Pilot Point fire was fully contained around 7:30 p.m. Friday with a total of 3,750 acres burned, said Division of Forestry spokesman Tim Mowry. The fire, which started at a local dump and spread across the tundra, was first reported Monday. Twenty-six firefighters were assigned to the fire, according to Mowry. The Kiktak Island fire, located across the Kuskokwim River from the village of Akiachak, was also fully contained as of about 8 p.m. Friday, with 254 total acres burned.

Two wildfires near villages in Southwest Alaska declared fully contained

The Pilot Point Fire (#104) near the village of Pilot Point on the Alaska Peninsula was declared fully contained at 7:33 p.m. Friday. Burned acreage remains at an estimated 3,750 acres. The 26 firefighting personnel working on the fire will continue to grid the fire for any remaining hot spots today. A drone equipped with an infrared camera will be flown over the fire today to help identify any remaining sources of heat that need to be extinguished. A full demobilization of firefighting personnel is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today. The Pilot Point Fire started on Monday when a fire escaped the village dump and spread into tundra grass surrounding the dump. Local residents tried to put the fire out but were unable to do so and called for help.
