How People Convinced Loved Ones To Get A COVID Vaccine

Kiersten Essenpreis for BuzzFeed News Every day for the last month or so, roughly 2 million to 3 million coronavirus vaccines have been injected into arms across the United States. And with each shot, with each vaccine selfie posted to social media, the eventual end of the pandemic inches ever closer. BuzzFeed News asked readers to share their experiences convincing wary loved ones to sign up for a COVID-19 shot. We received almost 170 responses (including only two from anti-vaccine trolls!) from people who opened up about deeply personal and emotional conversations they had with family members and friends. In subsequent interviews, respondents said they shared scientific evidence that the vaccines authorized in the US are overwhelmingly safe and effective. They tried listening in good faith to people’s fears and concerns and responding in kind. They tried debunking the misinformation that was spreading on social media.

The news didn’t bode well for her efforts managing the $80,000-plus worth of private student loans she’s still paying off nearly two decades after completing her bachelor’s degree. The financial burden is so heavy that Baumann, a marketing director based in Greensboro, North Carolina, says she can’t even log in and look at her account without experiencing severe anxiety.

Emerging Markets May Poised for Growth

Emerging Markets May Poised for Growth Money.com 1/13/2021 © Kiersten Essenpreis for Money Emerging-markets-bounce-back-up Emerging markets stocks have lagged those in U.S. for years. Now with the dollar weakening and developing economies set to enjoy post-Covid 19 growth, some financial advisers are turning bullish on this volatile sector. When people think about emerging markets, China often comes to mind, but funds that invest in emerging markets often cast a larger net to include countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and India, among others. The MSCI Emerging Markets Index, a widely-used benchmark, captures large and mid-cap stocks across 27 emerging markets countries. This index, which had only four positive years of annual performance since 2013, gained 18.4% in 2019 and 18.3% in 2020, after the year got off to a rocky start, largely due to the pandemic.

3 Reasons to Love Mutual Funds

3 Reasons to Love Mutual Funds Money.com 1/7/2021 © Kiersten Essenpreis for Money three-best-things-mutual-funds-sundae Want to get started investing? Experts say your best move is to ignore headlines about hedge funds and Bitcoin and focus on a cheap convenient vehicle that’s been around for decades: mutual funds. “A mutual fund rolls up other securities inside of it like stocks or bonds and offers a simplified option for investors,” says Matthew Fleming, senior financial advisor at Vanguard Personal Advisor Services. Most mutual funds follow one of two basic investment strategies. Active funds aim to find winning stocks (or bonds), often with the help of a team of analysts that interviews executives and pours over company financials. Passive, or index, funds follow market benchmarks like the S&P 500, aiming to keep costs low while delivering market-matching returns.
