Windsor-Essex food banks demand expected rise through winter

WINDSOR, ONT. Nearly a month has passed since gift-giving season and food banks are once again in demand, with the need expected to increase. The conveyor belt was busy Wednesday at the Unemployed Help Centre where a steady stream of people came to collect a box with some necessities. “Numbers are still increasing, people are still laid off,” UHC food bank coordinator Lynda Davidson told CTV News. Davidson said she has been seeing new people, faces and tears on a regular basis. “People don’t want to come to a food bank, people don’t want to ask but we’re in the time when we need to ask for help,” she said.

Local businesses team up to host a grab and go Christmas soup kitchen

WINDSOR, ONT. This Christmas Day, if you are hungry, The Magical Mushroom Hub at 879 Walker Road is inviting you to enjoy a free bowl of soup. Starting at noon, freshly cooked soup will be given out through a “grab-and-go” style soup kitchen. The nutritious soup is made from ingredients donated by local farms and businesses. “Our soup is going to be vegan and gluten-free, we want to make sure that as many people have the capacity to enjoy the soup,” says Denis Vidmar, owner of The Mush Hub He says the idea sparked after a conversation he had with the downtown Windsor Kids First Food Bank a few weeks ago.
