Six months pregnant with her first child and working from home, Kiyonda Powell wasn t exactly jumping at the idea of turning the one extra room in her condo into a nursery. It used to be my home-office-slash-storage-space, and I couldn t wrap my head around transitioning it at the time, recalls Powell, the founder of DC-based Kiyonda Powell Design Studio. I thought, I ll just do a bassinet in my bedroom. Plus, it was a rental apartment and she was considering a move. But on the heels of some good press from her room at the nearby Aspire Design and Home showhouse, Powell realized that maybe the perfect next project was something closer to home.
