Kid Packs program addresses food insecurity in Helena area

HELENA â About one in seven people in the Helena area face hunger or food insecurity, but Helena Food Share officials believe that number is even higher among area children. The Food Shareâs Kid Packs program aims to address that issue, and help keep kids fed.
Kid Packs contain healthy, kid-friendly food and drinks, enough to help kids at risk of hunger get through the weekend.
âItâs so incredibly important, itâs life-changing for these kids,â Bryant Elementary School principal Trish Klock said. âThey donât have to worry about getting food.â

HELENA â For thousands of people in the Helena area, the next meal is not guaranteed, and according to Helena Food Share officials, the COVID-19 pandemic has only made that a reality for more people.
âItâs just this definite need that people are saying âwe donât have enough to put food on our table, and I want to make sure my kids are fed,ââ Helena Food Share executive director Bruce Day said.
Day said through 2020, the Helena Food Share served an average 1,250 households a month in the Helena area. Each month, about 110 of those were new families needing help for the first timeâthat is a 40-percent increase from the 2019 monthly new client average. Food Share officials said it is the most dramatic increase they have seen, higher than the economic downturn in 2008 and 2009.

HELENA â Approximately 230 young adults from across the nation are departing for their second round of service with AmeriCorpsâ National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC). These teams have piled into vans and deployed across the country to âGet Things Done for Americaâ during the pandemic.
In a press release, the NCCC says the COVID-19 pandemic has devastated communities across the nation and that the pandemic has contributed to rising food insecurity and increased homelessness due to a lack of affordable housing and the ability to make ends meet.
