We the undersigned view with much apprehension and concern the current status of the Covid-19 outbreak in the country.
Our national metrics paint a very bleak picture of Covid-19 pandemic management. Despite movement control orders (MCOs) and other health interventions, the daily reported cases are not decreasing.
The Cumulative Incidence Density (per 100,000 population) and the Infection Rate (active cases per 1,000 population) is not flattening, with the latest national Infection Rate registered at 0.879 per 1,000 population, meaning between eight and nine persons are actively infected for every 10,000 people.
The testing positive rate (rolling seven-day average) is rising, registering 8.9 percent on Jan 3,2021, well above the World Health Organization s (WHO) 5.0 percent benchmark of effective pandemic control and containment.

COVID-19 | Last week’s spat between Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang over Covid-19 vaccines highlighted an important feature of the procurement process - non-disclosure agreements (NDAs).
Why do pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer and Moderna impose NDAs in the first place? Are NDAs common? Who stands to benefit from such secrecy?
To answer these questions, we spoke to two experts - health policies specialist Dr Khor Swee Kheng and Lim Chee Han, a health economics and public health researcher.
Khor is an independent consultant for few organisations while Lim is attached to local think tank Third World Network.
Vaccine procurement on track Malaysia has signed another deal to purchase an additional 6.4 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine from AstraZeneca.
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s decision to widen its choice of vaccines for Covid-19 has drawn guarded acceptance from experts.
One described it as “the least imperfect solution” while another stressed the need to base any such decision on scientific evidence.
Health systems and policies specialist Dr Khor Swee Kheng said given the supply constraints worldwide, purchasing from multiple suppliers is the best option.
But with a multiple choice of vaccines, there has to be a strategy on how they are deployed and who gets what vaccine, he added.
