GEORGE TOWN: The logging industry should be reopened as the furniture export sector has been reopened under Phase Two of the National Recovery Plan (NRP), says the Malaysian Furniture Council (MFC). Our immediate concern now is that the 4,000 members under our umbrella could face a crunch if they run out of stock after clearing what they have, said MFC president Khoo Yeow Chong.
He added that the shutdown of the industry for over a month created major issues, as many of the 30,000 workers had moved to the manufacturing sector seeking employment. As such the government must look into opening up the upstream industry of logging and the timber business as it is essential for the furniture industry, said Khoo.
