Two months ago, we reported that police statistics indicated the Eastern Cape was the most dangerous province in SA. This report occasioned protest from the provincial government which, naturally, keenly guards this province’s image. Statistics can be misleading. A day spent in Cape Town’s gang-infested Cape Flats or inner Johannesburg is potentially more dangerous than one in Vincent Heights or Beacon Bay.
