Poland got big plays from its shortstop and its leadoff hitter in the first inning of Wednesday’s softball victory against Oak Hill.
The playmaker in both instances was freshman Khloe O’Leary, who gobbled up a grounder with one out and runners on first and second and got the lead runner to keep the Raiders from scoring early. O’Leary then reached base for the first of four times with a lead-off double in the bottom of the first and scored the game’s first run.

POLAND When she walked the first to batters of the game, it appeared Poland pitcher Atlantis Martin was in for a rough start Wednesday.
Then she picked up the first of her 12 strikeouts, got out of the first-inning jam and helped the Knights knock out the Raiders 13-3 in a non-conference softball game at Poland Regional High School.
“I’m kind of used to it because I don’t want to say I always have a bad inning in the beginning, but I usually have that rough start, and then I pull myself out of it,” Martin, a junior, said. “So it does feel good, though, to be able to pull myself out of it, and it definitely helps the team, too.”
