Rockets have streamed out of Gaza and Israel has pounded the territory with air strikes as the most severe outbreak of violence since a 2014 war took on many hallmarks of that devastating 50-day conflict.
Palls of grey smoke rose in Gaza, as Israeli air strikes levelled two apartment towers and hammered the militant group’s multiple security installations, destroying the central police compound.
In Israel, barrages of hundreds of rockets fired by Gaza’s Hamas rulers and other militants at times overwhelmed missile defences and brought air raid sirens echoing across Tel Aviv, Israel’s biggest metropolitan area, and other cities.
The worst violence in years between Israelis and Palestinians showed no signs of letting up on Wednesday, as continued Israeli airstrikes and Hamas rocket fire prompted the United Nations to warn the conflict could mushroom into full-scale war.
Israel s bombing campaign in Gaza has now killed at least 48 people, including 14 children, and injured over 300 more, according to the Gaza-based Palestinian health ministry. Israel says at least 15 of the dead were Hamas militants. Stop the fire immediately. We re escalating towards a full-scale war, tweeted UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland.

Israel has killed a string of senior Hamas military figures and pounded three multi-storey towers as it hammered the Gaza Strip with air strikes and militants in the territory fired barrages of rockets.
Dozens have died in the most severe outbreak of violence since a 2014 war, with no resolution in sight.
The fighting has taken on many hallmarks of that devastating 50-day conflict between Israel and Hamas, but with a startling new factor: a burst of fury from Israel’s Palestinian citizens in support of those living in the territories as well as counterviolence by Jewish Israelis.
