New Police Reform Measures Change Little in Appleton, Green Bay

New Police Reform Measures Change Little in Appleton, Green Bay By Rob Sussman Jun 23, 2021 | 6:22 PM GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Governor Tony Evers signed several police reform bills into law this week. One of them bans the use of chokeholds by police. Green Bay Police Commander Kevin Warych says that in Green Bay, that changes nothing. “Well, we prohibited chokeholds in 2020,” Kevin Warych said before naming the criteria for using a chokehold. “Chokeholds were only authorized in deadly force situations.” In Appleton, Chief Todd Thomas says it’s redundant. “I’ve been in law enforcement in Wisconsin for 37 years and we don’t train chokeholds,” said Thomas.

Police: Number of Shots Fired Incidents in Green Bay ‘Alarming’ By Casey Nelson Jun 9, 2021 | 2:14 PM GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Shots rang out Tuesday night at the BP gas station on the east side of downtown Green Bay. The shooting didn’t result in any injuries, but it was the 30th shots fired called police have responded to this year. Commander Kevin Warych says detectives worked through the night and well into the afternoon investigating the shooting. “They’re working tirelessly to make sure that people in the community know that this is not tolerated. That we’re going to do everything possible to locate the people responsible for these crimes,” Warych told WTAQ News. “The gun violence we’re seeing in the city of Green Bay is alarming. It’s important for the community to know that we have investigators, officers, and the violent crime suppression task force working on this.”
