How to see the ‘Christmas Star’ in Arizona on the night of Dec. 21
Jupiter and Saturn are almost aligned on Dec. 21 and some are calling the rarity a Christmas Star. It s been nearly 800 years since the conjunction happened.
PHOENIX - It s something that hasn t happened in nearly eight-hundred years
Jupiter and Saturn are almost aligned and will get so close the night of Monday, Dec. 21, they ll almost look like one planet.
The rarity is called the Christmas Star because some astronomers think it s what led the three kings to Bethlehem.

Stargazers are dusting off their telescopes to see a once in a lifetime celestial event on Monday night.
On the darkest day of the year, the winter solstice, Jupiter and Saturn will engage in a great conjunction, meaning that the two planets will be separated by only one-tenth of one degree. To put this in perspective, the width of the moon is 0.5 degrees, meaning that the two planets will be about one-fifth the apparent width of the moon. This close encounter of the two planets will look like one bright star to the human eye (especially those with poor eyesight) on Earth. It s the first time humans have been able to see this great conjunction clearly in the last 800 years.

It s called the Great Conjunction. That s when Jupiter and Saturn get really close together. As long as you re looking to the southwest, find a spot where there aren t any buildings in your view, and you ll be able to see it.

So Jupiter and Saturn have been drawing closer the last few days. Tell me what they’ll look like on the night of December 21.
This is an event that happens every twenty years or so when Jupiter and Saturn get close in the sky. This one is really pretty neat because they’re going to get really close… With our naked eye, it’s going to look like they’re the same thing… I think it’s a useful thing on clear nights between now and the 21
st to go outside, and look at them in the southwest, Jupiter’s the bright one, Saturn a little bit fainter, and see how they’re getting closer every night. You can see why the ancients called these bodies “planets,” which means the Wanderers, because they wander across the night sky, and looking at this conjunction over several nights you can see why they called them that.
