When Keno City was put under an evacuation alert last week because of wildfires, local residents hurried to finish assembling their fire protection system. The community, which has been without protection since its fire truck was removed by the Yukon government in 2019, is frustrated with how little the government is doing to protect them from fire.
More than a year after two fires in the small community of about two dozen people destroyed an iconic hotel and a home, Keno City agreed to pilot a new fire prevention program.

Leo Martel said he wanted to leave a legacy, and renovated the hotel so it would last forever. But, he said, my only fear was fire. People had a great time in there, Martel told CBC s
Yukon Morning. I tried to make sure that everybody felt the building . the atmosphere in there.
Martel said he did not have insurance for the hotel, and has been overwhelmed by the community s support.
As of Monday, a GoFundMe page had raised more than $14,000 .
