VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Erik Mezick, husband and father of two teens, died surrounded by something he loved so much - the water. It was sad to see him pass in a drowning being such a strong swimmer, said Kevin Mezick, Erik s brother.
Mezick, age 47, died in December 2020. The box truck he was driving on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel towards Virginia Beach when he hit the guard rail, overturned and died plunging into 38 degree water. Erik touched people in a special way, said Coach Mike Lahey, coach of the Delmarva Dogfish.

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - For close to four months Kevin Mezick left his home in Maryland and searched the waters of the Chesapeake Bay near Fisherman s Island, in hopes to find his brother Erik. I made about 40 or more trips there, said Kevin.
News 3 was there as Kevin scanned the bay one morning in January, looking for a needle in a haystack. I would go a couple times a week, I was ready to leave Saturday morning, I was packed and ready to go, he said.
