i think it does as the time unfolds and investigations unfold. and perhaps the ethics committee comes together. you know, all of us, in the delegation, in many of the new york delegation and as of yesterday, we had calls for resignation from one of our colleagues from ohio. so, the calls for resignation are coming from different parts. not only new york. i know that the speaker is doing his best with what he has to deal with right now. and i think that we will get together after next week, when we get back to the hill. i think we will all get together and we ll figure this out. congressman, let me ask you about a different topic. that s the debt ceiling. congress warned that the u.s. could call on its debt as soon as june. there s some house republicans in your conference that are talking about perhaps using this as leverage to get some kind of
voted for a george santos that is not the real george santos. that s the issue that we re facing here. let s play what congressman santos has said about the calls for him to resign. let s listen. i wish well all their opinions. but i was elected by 142,000 people. until those same 142,000 people say they don t want me, we ll find out in two years. i ve worked my whole life. i ve lived an honest life. i ve never been accused of any bad doing. i mean, the part he says i ve lived an honest life, it sounds like he s incapable of telling the truth. maybe there s something pathological going on here with the congressman. one of the issues at this point, congressman, is that the new speaker, kevin mckcarthy, is standing by santos. do you think it s time to perhaps meet with the speaker? have you thought about talking to the speaker and saying, something more needs to be done.
failed to comply about requirement to preserve these records, if they did what kevin mckcarthy wants and refused to turn over the records, that would be a violation of law. so this is absolutely unjustified by law and it raises serious questions under the house ethics rules and other laws for kevin mccarthy himself. you bring up house ethics rules. does this constitute legally obstruction by threatening the telecom companies with future action? well, john, it meets the elements of obstruction. it s a threat. it s an attempt to stop them through that threat from turning over documents. it s self motivated. it s corrupt and mccarthy is worried about what may be in those records on him and on members of his caucus.
