All support the proposed steel cable net system, that would hang below the span around 2018. Suicide barriers were approved a few years back. Todays vote is about funding. The directors are poised to approve spending 20 million for the 76 million project. The rest of the money will be covered by the state and federal government. If approved, this is a huge step in the decadeslong debate over whether or not there should be suicide barriers to save lives. Since the bridge opened in 1937, more than 1,400 people jumped to their deaths. Last year set a record with 46 suicides in one year, including the death of 18yearold kyle camboa, whose father has joined the push for safety nets.
