Florence S Fosgate

Florence S. Fosgate, who lived in Pocasset for many years, died at home January 8 at the age of 88. Ms. Fosgate had Alzheimer’s disease and spent the five years prior to her death at Stafford Hill Assisted Living in Plymouth. She was the widow of Charles M. Fosgate Jr. The daughter of Edna Frances (Southwick) Potter and Merwin Grant Potter, she grew up in a farmhouse in Braintree with her older sister, Elinor, her parents and grandparents, during the Great Depression. The girls wore clothes made by their mother, walked everywhere they went, and enjoyed simple pleasures, such as playing with paper dolls, looking for “fairies” in backyard flowers, and picking blueberries for pancakes at Charge Pond. She never lost her down-to-earth, sensible nature. She learned early to always be “useful” and could make a pie from scratch by age 11.
