Smoke from western wildfires brings thick haze over Chicago

In this photo provided by the Bootleg Fire Incident Command, a bear cub clings to a tree after being spotted by a safety officer at the Bootleg Fire in southern Oregon, Sunday, July 18, 2021. As more fire personnel moved into the area, the cub scurried down the tree trunk and later left after being offered water. Smoke and ash from the wildfires have drifted thousands of miles, reaching as far as New York. In Chicago, a blanket of thick haze covered the sky and turned it milky white. Mother Nature reality check: How to protect plants from the late-season freeze

Daffodils are deceptive flowers. The same goes for magnolias, those beguiling blooms that trick the restless gardener into thinking it s time to load up on supplies at greenhouses and nurseries.   Mother Nature, in the sneakiest of seasons, always gets the last laugh. A harsh cold front will likely send temperatures below freezing Tuesday and Wednesday nights across the Chicago area. Normal highs this time of year should be in the low 60s, with normal lows around 40. The late-season cold snap has left the plant clinic at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle buzzing with hotline calls and emails from anxious gardeners. Plant guru Julie Janoski helps ease their minds with some helpful advice and perspective.

Winter s last hurrah Snow, freezing temperatures in Tuesday s forecast

Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times Freezing temperatures and a late-season snowfall are forecast for the Chicago area Tuesday, in what the National Weather Service is calling “winter’s last hurrah.” Rain showers were expected to follow a cold front Monday afternoon, transitioning to snow sometime overnight, possibly around 2 or 3 a.m., according to Kevin Birk, a meteorologist for the weather service. “We’ll probably see some snow flying across the area during the day” Tuesday, he said, adding that much of the precipitation may remain a mix of rain and snow. The heaviest snow was expected south of Chicago, but accumulations could be slushy as surface temperatures hover in the mid-30s, Birk said. Unpaved surfaces could see between a half-inch and an inch of snow, he said.
