42 virus cases active locally

KETCHIKAN (KDN) – Ketchikan on Wednesday set a new record for the highest single-day case total for 2021 thus far, with 13 cases counted by the local Emergency Operations Center. “Two cases were determined to be community spread; one case was related to recent travel; one case was determined to be close contact to a known positive; and nine remain under investigation,” according to a Wednesday evening EOC press release. Of the cases that were pending EOC investigation after being recorded on Tuesday, six were found to be due to close contact with a known positive, one was determined to be community spread and one was still being investigated as of Wednesday.

5 school cases prompt closure

KETCHIKAN (KDN) — The Ketchikan Emergency Operations Center announced seven COVID-19 cases on Tuesday; two that were reported late on Monday and five involving individuals who attended weekend events at Ketchikan High School, prompting Kayhi to close for students and staff on Wednesday. The Ketchikan School District announced in a press release on Tuesday afternoon that it had “been notified of five positive COVID-19 cases of individuals who attended the wrestling tournament held at Kayhi on April 23 and 24, and one individual who attended the Kayhi prom and parent-sponsored after prom party held on April 24.” The release noted that “Public health, district nursing staff, and coaching staff are working together to identify close contacts.”

8 new virus cases recorded in KTN

KETCHIKAN (KDN) — Eight total cases of COVID-19 — with two cases involving crewmembers on an Alaska Marine Highway System vessel — were reported by the Ketchikan Emergency Operations Center on Monday. Ketchikan Charter School s main building will be closed for in-person learning on Tuesday after a positive COVID-19 case was identified involving an individual connected to the school. According to a late afternoon press release from the EOC, the two cases involving individuals onboard the AMHS vessel Matanuska were reported on Sunday. One of those individuals is quarantining in Ketchikan hotel, and the other is quarantining at home in Juneau, according to AMHS information.
