Non-Thermal Plasmas: The Solution to Face Mask Pollution

Image Credit: REC Stock Footage/Shutterstock.com State-of-the-art plasma technologies are being combined with printed electronics to enable the safe reuse of single-use personal protective equipment (PPE) as researchers from the University of Southampton attempt to tackle shortages and the mountain of excess waste generated throughout the coronavirus pandemic. PPE Problem A 2020 survey suggested that 129 billion single-use face masks are being used worldwide per month, with more than 53 million sent to landfill every day in the UK. At a time when we are trying to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, this is a huge environmental concern. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates there has been a 40% increase in the amount of PPE requested since the virus first emerged in 2019. The massive volumes required have led to worldwide shortages, placing healthcare workers and those most at risk in danger of being exposed to the virus.

Massless Energy Storage: The Next Step in Battery Technology

Image Credit: asharkyu/Shutterstock.com In this environmentally conscious world, fossil fuels are being shunned in favor of renewables for electricity generation and transportation. Due to their periodic nature, excess energy generated by renewables is frequently stored in batteries. However, these often add extra weight to the cars and consumer electronics they power. Researchers from the Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden have developed a structural battery that is ten times better than all previous versions and paves the way for an essentially massless energy storage system for electric vehicles (EVs) and other technology. Vanishing Battery Weight Unlike today’s batteries, which constitute a large part of a vehicle’s weight without performing any load-bearing functions, structural batteries act as a power source

Using Wearables and Smartphones to Detect Alzheimer s Disease

Image Credit: Atthapon Raksthaput/Shutterstock.com The brain is one of the most complex structures in the known universe, a network of cells, neurons, and connections that control sensation, movement, thought, memories, and feeling. But when this network becomes damaged, a person can develop dementia, a neurodegenerative disease that affects their memories and personalities. Dementia is not a normal part of aging, and although visible symptoms manifest themselves later in life, the diseases that cause it often develop much earlier. A new partnership between Alzheimer’s Research UK and Boston University aims to create a digital device that can detect neurodegenerative diseases 10 to 15 years before the first symptoms appear.
