Kern County Fairgrounds max vaccination site to begin offering drive-thru service

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) â As the race to vaccinate as many people as possible ramps up Kern County announced that the fairgrounds will now offer drive-thru vaccinations starting next week.
The mass vaccination clinic at the Kern County Fairgrounds had previously been set up for walk-thru services.
Kern County is offering vaccines for anyone 16 and older. Currently, only the Pfizer vaccine is authorized for anyone 16 and older. That will be used for both walk-up and drive-thru vaccines at the fairgrounds.

Can anyone get a shot?
Vaccines remain hard to get for some, even those 50 and older who are officially eligible. But in some parts of the state, access is being thrown open.
That’s been the case at Cal State Los Angeles. Eligible people have failed to claim thousands of appointments at the vaccination site through the MyTurn registration system. As a result, vaccinators have been allowed to inoculate adults walking up to the site without an appointment including people who don’t qualify under the current eligibility criteria, said Brian Ferguson, a spokesman with the state Office of Emergency Services.

Hundreds of thousands of Californians 16 and older are becoming eligible for COVID-19 vaccines this week as counties and health systems across the state expand eligibility ahead of schedule.
Officials in Riverside and Kern counties made the surprise announcement Monday, as did UC Davis Health in Sacramento.

“This is really important news,” Riverside County spokeswoman Brooke Federico said. “It’s really something we’ve been waiting for for some time to show that we can open up eligibility to all of our residents who are available to get it per the manufacturer and again, continue to move forward, move out of this pandemic.”
