When Gov. Kay Orr appointed a U.S senator following the sudden death of Sen. Ed Zorinsky in 1987, there were big name Republican officeholders on the list of potential appointees.
"There are people who are more engaged in political theater now than the hard work of being a good senator," said Patrick O Donnell, who is stepping aside after 45 years.
