Students at St. David’s School in Riverhead are raising money to help keep a beloved educator’s memory alive.
Each Wednesday in May, a group of UPK students set up a lemonade stand at the school, located on Roanoke Avenue, offering lemonade, iced tea and snacks.
According to director Rose Horton, proceeds from the weekly lemonade sale will be used to create a garden in memory of Keri Stromski, who died from breast cancer last month at age 48.

JAMESPORT, NY Keri Lynn Stromski, 48, a beloved kindergarten teacher from Jamesport, died on April 6 after a fierce battle with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, leaving a trail of tears so far and wide that all of Riverhead seemed to be weeping.
Stromski made headlines around the world in March when one of her kindergarten students, whom she d been instructing virtually, made a hug machine along with this family so that his favorite teacher could hug again, something she d been missing so much. The story went viral and suddenly, the world knew something Riverhead had known all along Keri Stromski was a bright light of love for the many who blossomed under her tutelage.
To change a person’s life for the better requires only a moment of time.
Keri Lynn Stromski lived her life by that motto as a teacher at Aquebogue Elementary School, where she inspired countless students, and as a fierce advocate for fellow cancer thrivers, an unforeseen role she accepted to bring hope to those in need as she bravely confronted her own fate with stage four breast cancer.
Jill Kubetz, Ms. Stromski’s sister, said that moment of time, along with compassion and a hug, can make all the difference.
“We know this because we hugged the entire Town of Riverhead over the past two days,” she said.
