The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that "a record 15 million people in Sudan – one-third of the population – are currently facing acute food insecurity," as the WFP's Comprehensive Food Security and Vulnerability Assessment (CFSVA) shows.
The United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) published a new report yesterday on the situation in conflict-plagued Kereinik, West Darfur. They explain that the security situation in Kereinik and El Geneina, which has also witnessed severe violence in the past years, remains calm but unpredictable. An estimated 125,000 people are still displaced.
At the end of his four-day visit, the UN Expert on Human Rights in Sudan, Adama Dieng, today expressed his deep concern at the human rights situation in the county. He criticised the human rights violations documented since the coup d’état on October 25 last year, the worsening of economic and social rights since the coup, and in a press conference in Khartoum before leaving the country this afternoon.
The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Khardiata Lô N’Diaye, has announced a grant of $20 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) for Sudan. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) will receive US$12 million, the UN Children’s Agency (UNICEF) $7 million, with the World Food Programme (WFP) receiving $1 million to provide logistic support.
The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Khardiata Lo N’Diaye, has reiterated the commitment of humanitarian partners to support thousands of people displaced by violence in parts of Kereinik and El Geneina, after her visit to El Geneina, capital of West Darfur. “Humanitarian partners will continue to provide humanitarian assistance and support thousands of people who were displaced by violence and insecurity in parts of West Darfur over the past few weeks,” she said.
