An ordinary Muslim woman from a remote village in North Kerala’s Malappuram district is today one of the general secretaries of the Congress party in Kerala.
She announced her resignation from the AICC and KPCC recently after being denied a party ticket in Ettumanur during the recently held Assembly election.

Rosamma Punnoose, 44 years-old when Kerala elected its first post-Independence Legislative Assembly in 1957, was elected from the Devikulam constituency in the Idukki district in southeast Kerala. The first MLA to take oath, she became the
protem speaker and went on to administer the oath of office to other MLAs on April 10, 1957.

Kozhikode: The last time this author met Noorbina Rashid, the founding general secretary of the Indian Union Women’s League (IUWL), 20 years ago, she was an aspirant for the Kozhikkod-2 assembly seat. “I have already proved my mettle here as a two-time councillor, and I truly deserve a seat for the assembly elections,” Noorbina had said back then. Her eyes sparkled with confidence.
